Info on Livingstone

baobabtree.jpg

Large Baobab tree (Mubuyu), often referred to as the "upside-down tree" due to the root-like appearance of its branches.  It has large pod-like fruits - when these ripen they can be cracked open to reveal numerous seeds covered in a white powder.  It tastes a little bit like cream-of-tartar.  The fruit is sold in markets but was out of season when we visited.  Baobab trees have very long life spans, this particular tree is said to be over 300 years old!

JAM's favourite two-some, Robert Trudeau and Lise McIntyre shown here with some ladies at a local market in Livingstone.  This city is found in the south of Zambia and is named after missionary and explorer Dr. David Livingstone.

Many tourists go into this "rain" forest at the Victoria Falls, so the monkies in the area are no longer nervous of people.  This one came very close for a "treat".

Victoria Falls

The "knife-edge" bridge with a glimpse of the Victoria Falls on the left.  Walking by the Falls is a wonderful experience - we were quite drenched after our tour.  There are rain-coats for rent if one wants to remain dry.  The sound of the water and subsequent "smoke" rising from the spray is what inspired the local name for the waterfall: "Mosi-oa-Tunya" or "The Smoke that Thunders".
